During an first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” the metropolis, ushering in “a different age” and an audacious commencement to his administration.
A Historic Figure
The 34-year-old political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.
As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
